Create rail fence blocks:

  • Cut 1 ½ inch strips from each of your accent fabrics.
  • * If using fat eights or fat quarters you will need to cut (3) 1 ½ inch strips from each of your 6 fabrics.
  • ** If using (WOF) width of fabric you will need to cut (2) 1 ½ inch strips from each of your 6 fabrics.
  • *** Go scrappy, each rail fence blocks uses 1 ½ inches by 3 ½ inch strips.

For basic runner, choose 6 fabrics for the rail fence blocks.

Strip piece; sew 2 prints of 1 ½ inch strips right sides together. Press open.

Sew third print to first two strips to create the rail fence. Press open.

Continue until you have used all the cut strips from this group.

We will call this Set A.

Continue with 2nd fabric set.

Sew 2 prints of 1 ½ inch strips right sides together. Press open.

Sew third print to first two strips to create the 2nd set of rail fence. Press open.

Continue until you have used all the cut strips from this group. We will call this Set B.
Sub-cut each of Set A and Set B into 3 ½ inch blocks, these blocks will be your rail fence border.
You will need a total of 30 rail fence blocks.

Using 6 blocks from Set A and 6 blocks from Set B, arrange in opposite positions and sew together using a ¼ inch seam to create one side border.

Repeat for second border.

Sew 1st border long side of center panel. Press Open. Repeat for 2nd border.

Create end borders by sewing 5 rail fence blocks together.
One border should begin with a parallel block the second border should begin with a vertical block.
Sew border to each end of your table runner.

Your table runner is now ready to quilt and bind. Layer your table runner with batting and backing and quilt as desired.

After quilting add binding and enjoy! Make another for a friend.
